  1. 1910-1989. English philosopher.  He wrote 
  2. Language, Truth and Logic 1936, an exposition
  3. of the theory of `logical positivism', 
  4. presenting a criterion by which meaningful 
  5. statements (essentially truths of logic, as
  6. well as statements derived from experience) 
  7. could be distinguished from meaningless 
  8. metaphysical utterances (for example, claims
  9. that there is a God or that the world 
  10. external to our own minds is illusory).
  11. He was Wykeham professor of logic at Oxford
  12. 1959-78.  Later works included Probability
  13. and Evidence 1972 and Philosophy in the
  14. Twentieth Century 1982.
